A few months ago I decided it was time for a bedroom makeover. I didn’t want to break the bank with this makeover, so I set a budget of $500 and waited for some sales. I have loved my bed frame since I got it about 6 years ago. You can find it here at Birch Lane and I just love the classic simplicity of it. I wanted everything else to fall in line with that. My duvet cover was feeling a little too busy so I was looking for something a little simpler. Here’s a look at the before:

After hunting the internet I found my dream quilt at Pottery Barn. It’s simple and has a classic pattern with the diamond shape. I waited for Black Friday and the minute it went on sale I snapped it up! Then came the hard part of finding accent fabrics to go with it.

While places like Pottery Barn, Horchow and Ballard Design had pillows I LOVED, I already felt like I was breaking the bank with that new quilt! And some of the pillow cases were just as much as the quilt. So rather than get already made pillows, I visited all of the local fabric stores and found a fabric I really liked at Joann, but I wanted it turned so that the squares created diamonds. I should probably stop here and mention that my mom is quite the seamstress, as is Brittany. I can sew on buttons, hem things, and sew in a straight line butttt that’s about where my magic ends. Fabric/sewing math is not a math I can math. Thankfully my mom was able to math it all out and help me figure out how much fabric to buy and how to lay out the pillows on the fabric.

Having lived in Thailand for so long my mom has a massive back stock of fabrics including some really beautiful Thai silks. I was able to find a silk for two accent pillows in her stash! Plus, she had trim that worked perfectly for the small center pillow. I also found a striped fabric at Hobby Lobby that made a perfect final little accent pillow. Unfortunately I can’t link to either of those 🙁

I already had some pillow forms from my previous set up and I had a few laying around the house. But I did need to buy the small center pillow. I found this one on amazon that is great down alternative pillow that still feels nice and fluffy like down.

The final piece of the redo was lighting. I was looking for something a little more updated, preferably a sconce, since my bedside tables are on the smaller side. I found the perfect option on amazon that uses rechargeable light bulbs, meaning there was no digging into the walls! You can find these wall sconces here. They also come with 2 remotes filled with options which makes using them a breeze.

Full disclosure, I tried to hang these using 3M picture hanging velcro, but the back of the plate isn’t perfectly flat. So they ended up on the floor. Thankfully they were easy to hang, and if I move or want to replace them at some point, I just have to fill 2 small holes on each side. The included light bulbs last me about a week and half, maybe 2 weeks, before needing to be charged with about 2 hours of use per night. I would recommend these because they can be diy-ed and can also go in places where you may not be able to accessible electricity easily.

So here is the before and after! It took a few months to find it all and get it put together but I much prefer the updated look. It feels cleaner and fresh. And shockingly I was only over budget by about $3. For a quilt, lights, and 5 yards of high end fabric, I don’t think that’s too bad! Thanks for reading along!
